Connect to the Land: A Guide for Taking Action

This section of our website is full of ideas for what you can do to protect the working landscape that is the foundation of Vermont's economy and of our quality of life.  How we conserve, develop, steward and connect with the land can have impacts on everything from the success of a neighbor's business to the future of working forests in Vermont to our state's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.  Each day presents opportunities to strengthen the connections between our own lives, our communities and the land.  Whether it's eating at a restaurant that serves locally grown food or buying furniture made by a local craftsperson, you can make a difference one step at a time!

We add resources to the guide often, so check back for updates!  Special thanks to Smart Growth Vermont intern Sarah Von Lehman for preparing this guide.

Calculate Your Carbon Footprint

A carbon calculator helps you identify and quantify the impacts of your daily life on climate change. It also helps you find ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Some of the easiest and most satisfying strategies for reducing your footprint are outlined in this guide!  For instance, buying local food from nearby farms reduces the need to have food shipped across the country.  What's more, supporting the conservation of forests and farmland helps maintain the land's capacity to absorb carbon emissions.  And best of all, everything in this guide adds to quality of life for all Vermonters.
