COMMUNITY PLANNING PARTNERSHIP

Town of Danville

The Town of Danville is a small, close-knit community on Route 2, about halfway between Montpelier and St. Johnsbury.  It includes three small villages -- West Danville, Danville Village, and North Danville -- each of which has its own distinct character.  Route 2 has long been central to Danville's character and prosperity.  In recent years, though, the community has begun to investigate strategies for making the highway fit better within the community, particularly in Danville Village.  In cooperation with the Vermont Agency of Transportation and with the support of the Vermont Arts Council, Danville has developed a concept plan for narrowing Route 2 as it passes through the village, realigning streets around the green, and improving pedestrian access across the highway.

WHAT'S NEW...

The September 25 community meeting was a big success!  About three dozen residents came together to learn about smart growth and discuss how best to update zoning standards for the village to promote new development that is compatible with the village's character.

A summary of community input on appropriate village standards is available here.

The powerpoint from the meeting has also been put online in an easy-to-view format.

Proposed village district maps are available for review on the Project Materials page.

In conjunction with its planned work on Route 2, the Planning Commission has decided to update the zoning bylaws for the Danville Village and the surrounding area.  The goal is to make it easier to build new homes and businesses on vacant parcels in and around the village while at the same time ensuring that new development is compatible with the character of the village.  Striking the right balance will require input from a wide range of community residents, both those who live in the village and those who live in the rural portions of the town.  With assistance from Smart Growth Vermont and the Northeastern Vermont Development Association, the Town hopes to increase the vitality and sustainability of the village that is at the heart of the community.
